Today's big adventure was Marseille!
But first... my luggage! Proof! Where did you travel to, dear backpack?
View from our backyard.
First glimpse of the ocean!
After entering the city, we saw Notre Dame de la Garde for the first time.
My ticket for the "train" ride up to the cathedral.
Wee market by the seaside.

We ate at this wee restaurant which was FANTASTIC, and the couple next to us was eating with their dog; I love how Europeans don't care if you bring your dog in to eat with you.
Authentic Marseilles bouillabaisse!
THIS DESSERT WAS HEAVENLY.
On the train up to the cathedral!
On the ride up the mountain.
The prison where The Count of Monte Cristo is set.
Remnants of an old cafe.

The view from the top!

Notre Dame de la Garde!

All the art from back in the day was religious art, so everyone goes to the cathedrals to see it. When we arrived, we walked right into a service, which was just the most incredible experience ever. Listening to the organs playing, the choir singing, and the prayers being recited, and knowing that you were sitting in pews where people sat hundreds of years ago and listened to those same sounds... It was really quite magical.

Being in this building reminded me of this Josh Ritter song, called Paint Your Picture. The lyrics go:
"I have seen your eyes in paintings,
As cathedrals cried Hosanna"
It just felt so fitting.

Marseilles is a major sea port, and Notre Dame de la Garde has model ships hanging from the ceiling to protect the sailors.
Us with the view of Marseilles behind us.
The French refuse to plaster over and fix things like battle marks, because they believe that it is so important we remember what happened in history.
Bullet marks in the cathedral walls.
On the way back down.
As I've stated before, Provence is known for their lavender, so I bought some lavender-and-honey loose tea, and it smells just DELIGHTFUL.
