Bastille Day

7/14

To officially welcome in Bastille Day, we watched a History channel documentary of the French Revolution.

Now all I want to do is watch The Scarlet Pimpernel...

Our tiny town has been transformed into a sprawling market!

We took a stroll uptown following the French Revolution history lesson.

It goes on forever!

These dolls are really popular throughout Provence.

After lunch, it was time to head out to Avignon for the day.

Avignon is a walled city, completely surrounded by ramparts built in the 1200s.

The annual Theater Festival was going on in Avignon, so nearly every surface was covered in posters.

To the city!

The theater in the center of town.

Festivities!

Oh, American tourists...

UGH MOLIÈRE. GROSS. Still, I figured it was only a matter of time until I saw an advertisement for a Molière play...

For a period of over a hundred years, the Popes made Avignon their home. This was where they lived -- the Palais des Papes.

Enjoying a wee lunch.

Ahh, theater folks. :)

The Pont Saint-Bénezetis a "famous medieval bridge originally spanning the Rhône River between Avignon and Villeneuve-lès-Avignon on the left bank. It suffered frequent collapses during floods and had to be reconstructed several times. The bridge was finally put out of use by a catastrophic flood in 1668, which swept away much of the structure. Only four of the initial 22 arches remain intact today."

The Popes' vineyards with the Pont Saint-Bénezetis in the background.

The view from the Palais des Papes.

What fascinates me about the view from the Palais is when you look out over the landscape, it isn't that hard to imagine you're looking at the same view the Popes looked at... The lack of modern architecture, it really feels like you've traveled back to the time this was constructed.

Nasir's future career.

I really, really, really love French graffiti/murals.

This was my favourite poster I saw the whole excursion! ...I ended up taking it home with me when we left. :P

Kinda creepy...

I really wanted to go to the zoo...

Tea!

Back in the center of town, at the Palais des Papes.

Look at all these posters! This was what every building, street corner, vertical or horizontal surface looked like.

The French just add "-erie" to the end of whatever food they are serving at that particular restaurant, and voilà! A couscousserie!

These break-dancers were so awesome!

We watched them for like 20 minutes.

The motto of the French Revolution.

Ferris wheel off in the distance!

The fireworks were cancelled because of the Mistral. :(

My first impression of this dog was: that is the musk ox of dogs.

Magic hour at the Palais.

As the sun sets, we head for the ferris wheel and night market.

Ferris wheel! :D

The view of the city from the top of the wheel.

"Jack, I'm flying!"

The sunset from the top.

Down in the market.

Barbe à papa: "grandfather's beard." Or... cotton candy!

DELICIOUS.

Remember when I said I took that poster home with me? I sparked a bit of rebellion amongst the others, as well... :P
